Airport Bunnings
This major project, involving the earthworks for the new Bunnings Warehouse on Orchard Road, started in early October 2018. The scope of works includes the building earthworks, carpark, pavements, vehicle crossings, and 3-waters including sewer, stormwater, and water.
The full catalogue of Frews' GPS grade control system was employed for this project. The 20t excavator and 12H grader, each equipped with Leica iCON 3D machine control, enabled operators to work to exact levels, save time, and eliminate the risk of over-excavating. A Leica iCON rover unit was also used for set-out and for checking on-site levels against the plans.
With the works taking place on CIAL land, strict compliance was required around health and safety and nuisance dust control. Two Frews operators were recognised as site safety champions, a water cart was kept on site for dust suppression, and erosion, sediment, and debris exiting the site were controlled through daily road sweeping.
Brooklands Fire Station
Frews successfully tendered for the early works for the construction of the new Brooklands Fire Station, involving the construction of a foundation raft for the new structure. The job required the removal of 1,000m3 of soil, which was then backfilled with 2,000m3 of compacted AP65 and M4 AP40.
For this project, Frews utilised a Leica iCON GPS rover unit to accurately set out the extent of works and measure levels so that excavation and fill levels matched the plans exactly. This also allowed for the accurate monitoring and recording of fill levels.
Part of these works required Frews to coordinate with an archaeologist on site. This was managed to allow the archaeologist to work unimpeded while progress continued in non-hotspot areas. Transport routes were changed to accommodate houses in Kainga affected by truck movements, and self-imposed speed limits were set through residential areas.

Contaminated Ground Remediation
Frews handles contaminated material ranging from contaminated soils and asbestos to rubbish pits and landfill waste, with the ability to react quickly to unknown conditions and keep detailed control over health, safety, and disposal requirements.
Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2
Frews were subcontracted onto the CSM2 project in January 2017 and since then have removed several thousand tonnes of contaminated material from multiple sites along the motorway corridor. Throughout the course of this project Frews have demonstrated the ability to manage contaminated material in a range of scenarios, from bulk removal of contaminated stockpiles to excavating and removing historical disposal sites and asbestos pipelines.
Due to uncertainty at times around conditions and possible contaminants, work was sometimes of a reactive and adaptive nature. Frews allocated additional resources when new or unexpected contamination was discovered to maintain pre-programmed deadlines. The complex nature of the work and the specific requirements for both handling and disposal of the different contaminant types necessitated detailed site management plans and careful implementation. In addition to bulk earthworks, Frews also provided transport, material screening, demolition works, and skilled staff.
This project included many challenges, including traffic management requirements, difficult access to sites, complex site conditions, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders including other contractors, property owners, and environmental specialists.
Health and safety is a priority on all projects, but it is critical to be managed well on projects of this magnitude. A record of zero injuries for Frews staff on this project is evidence of a robust health and safety system with commitment from highly trained and motivated staff.
Redwood Fire Station
Frews were contracted to provide remediation and siteworks for the new Redwood Fire Station.
The works required the removal of asbestos from the buildings prior to demolition. Historic asbestos contamination in the soil was removed as well as arsenic contamination before the siteworks began.
A large shelterbelt was removed from the roadside to enable the installation of new reticulation systems.
Frews provided expert staff to remove the shelterbelt efficiently, minimising disruption to traffic. Qualified staff were made available during the holiday period to progress the demolition and asbestos remediation works, enabling the early commencement of bulk earthworks.
